Extra Options as Distractors in JMatch drag'n'drop

Posted by Stan Bogdanov on 29 April 2008 - 10:24

Introduction

This was one of my first experiments with HotPotatoes back in 2005. It has provoked quite some interest so I decided to write this short Howto.

You are creating your drag'n'drop matching exercise and you want more/extra options as distractors. For example, you have three, but you want five 'draggable' options. Here's a trick, it's so easy that you don't need to work with code, nor HTML editors. Let's get going.

Create your drag'n'drop exercise as usual in JMatch and put more 'draggable' options in the text fields for Right (jumbled) items, like in the screenshot below. Don't put anything that they should be matched with.

Here come two flavours of this kind of exercise.
If you are creating an ordering type of exercise where the items on the left must stay in a certain order, like in a conversation Speaker 1, Speaker 2, Speaker 1, etc., it is important to make sure the items are not shuffled - go to Configuration/Other and see if the box 'Shuffle order of items each time page loads' is NOT ticked.

If, however, it's only a regular matching type of exercise, and the items can be in any order, they can be safely shuffled. Tick that 'Shuffle order of items each time page loads' box.

That's it. 'Save' the file and 'Export as Drag and Drop'. The extra options/distractors will be draggable but they have nothing to match with, so they are always wrong options; and the scoring system will work ok.

Hi Stan,

Just to report a typo (sopme) here:

It has provoked quite sopme interest so I decided to write this short Howto.

I learn so much from you, it's nice to give something back. :-)
